Fatalities and Injuries

Summary tables of 1) NHTSA air bag fatalities and serious injuries, 2) NHTSA and Industry Partners redesigned air bag deployment investigations, and 3) NHTSA side air bag deployment investigations are published the first of each month. The tables are available here as web pages, and also in pdf format for downloading. The Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to view pdf files. If it is not already installed on your computer, you can obtain it free of charge from Adobe. Click here to download the version you need.

1)The following NHTSA Air Bag Fatal and Serious Injury Summary Report contains confirmed/unconfirmed fatal/non-fatal occupants by crash year, as well as, other numbers relating to restraint use and occupants saved by air bags. Confirmed numbers represent cases where the air bag has been verified as the injury mechanism. Unconfirmed numbers represent cases under active investigation where the air bag is suspected but has not yet been verified as the injury mechanism. The four tables that follow the report are NHTSA Summary Tables which contain basic information about confirmed air bag deployment related fatalities and serious injuries sustained in minor and moderate severity crashes.

2) The following NHTSA and Industry Partners (AAMA, AIAM, State Farm Insurance) Redesigned Air Bag Summary Report, NHTSA Redesigned Air Bag Summary Table, and Industry Partners Redesigned Air Bag Summary Table contain basic information about NHTSA and Industry Partners redesigned air bag deployment investigations. The purpose of these investigations is to assess the performance of redesigned air bags in real world crashes.
