ILLINOIS

In 2002, the Village of Alsip, Illinois Police Department Crime Prevention Unit participated in the "Safety Tips For Mature Driver Program" through the Fifth Municipal District Community Safety Initiatives Committee. This pro-gram was presented to the Worth Township Senior Citizen's Club at the Township Hall in Alsip to address highway-rail grade crossings. Failure to yield the right-of-way has been found to be a primary collision cause involving the older driver. Much of the eastern section of Worth Township, including Chicago Ridge, Worth, Alsip, and Merrionette Park are criss-crossed by railroads. Seventy-five participants were provided information on railroad signs and signals to beware of, and the optical illusion that makes a train seem farther away, and traveling slower than it really is. Participant evaluations indicated that the attendees welcomed the addition of safe crossing information to the "Safety Tips For Mature Drivers Program." This component of the course is planned for future presentations.

The Crime Prevention Unit has delivered traffic safety talks to senior citizens at the local bingo hall. This innovative approach allows officers to reach 100-200 individuals each time the presentation is given.

Superintendent Terry Hillard of the Chicago, Illinois Police Department provided the introduction for the "Safe Return and Law Enforcement, Saving Lives Together" video produced by the Alzheimer's Association and funded through the United States Department of Justice. The video is a presentation for law enforcement on interacting with Alzheimer's victims.

The video addresses driving and Alzheimer's disease. The police department provided assistance during the filming of this training video.
