Stakeholder Analysis

What are some of the effects traffic safety has on this community sector? Why should this person be interested in traffic safety?

How much influence does this sector have on the success of your Partners for Rural Traffic Safety project? Does the sector have large numbers of employees? Are those employees required to drive? Do they have traffic safety risks?

What is the best way for the Community Partner Team leader to communicate with this sector? Does the sector have newsletters, local associations, or regular meetings?

PART 2. (Activities during the meeting.)

The Community Partner Team leader should have mailed a letter describing the Partners for Rural Traffic Safety process when confirming the appointment.

  • Thank them for their time and initial interest.
  • Explain the role of the team leader.
  • Ask if they have questions or concerns about the process.
  • Share with them some of the reasons (listed in Part 1) why you believe they should have an interest in the process.
  • Determine the sector leader’s commitment to action.

Ask if they are willing to nominate people from within their organization or sector who could represent them on the Community Partner Team. Names and phone numbers of potential partnership members:

While the team leader meets with the sector leader, ask him or her if he or she would be willing to support your effort by contributing meeting rooms, audio-visual equipment, printing and photocopying of materials, etc...

Thank them and remind them to buckle up.

Health Care
Sector leaders to interview for potential Community Partner Team members:
  • hospital administrators;
  • public health officers;
  • emergency medical services leaders; and
  • clinic directors.
Motivations for health care workers to become involved in traffic safety:
  • less crashes and injuries relieve stress on emergency medical services and emergency room personnel;
  • reduced costs associated with injuries; and
  • health care has a goal of keeping people healthy.

Law Enforcement
Sector leaders to interview for potential Community Partner Team members:
  • sheriff;
  • chief of police; and
  • state police.
Motivations for law enforcement to be involved in traffic safety:
  • helps them do their job;
  • less stress responding to fatal crashes;
  • less time spent writing traffic crash reports;
  • more time spent doing other types of police work; and
  • good community public relations.

Business
Sector leaders to interview for potential Community Partner Team members:
  • chamber of commerce president; and
  • owners of major businesses.
Motivations for business to be involved in traffic safety:
  • insurance costs for drivers;
  • health insurance premiums;
  • lost productivity of injured workers;
  • training expenses for replacing employees who die;
  • lost time of workers if family members are injured and they need to care for them; and
  • workmen’s compensation insurance costs.

Education
Sector leaders to interview for potential Community Partner Team members:
  • superintendent of schools;
  • president of local colleges; and
  • school principals.
Motivations for educators to be involved in traffic safety:
  • student health and safety;
  • less disruptions due to funerals;
  • opportunity to educate students and inform them; and
  • fewer expenses in special education for brain damaged injured students.

Faith
Sector leaders to interview for potential Community Partner Team members:
  • head of ecumenical ministerial associations; and
  • pastoral leaders of major places of worship.
Motivations for faith sector to be involved in traffic safety:
  • keep more people in the pews;
  • less bereavement counseling for families and friends of traffic fatalities, allowing more time for promotion of faith;
  • responsibility to family members; and
  • responsibility to serve the community.

General Community
Sector leaders to interview for potential Community Partner Team members:
  • parents of young children;
  • mayor;
  • county commission members; and
  • youth.
Motivations for general community to be involved in traffic safety:
  • parents want to do the right thing for their children;
  • it is everyone’s problem and it costs us all; and
  • it is a public policy issue.

Partners for Rural Traffic Safety
Community Partner Team Member Agreement

_________________________________________ is recognized as a person who has volunteered to help solve some of the pressing traffic safety issues facing our community. As a member of the Community Partner Team you have an opportunity to learn more about traffic safety issues, occupant safety and processes used to build public policy decisions. This task should be rewarding, educational and fun. To get the most benefit from your participation, you agree:

  • to attend meetings of the Community Partner Team on a regular basis;
  • to represent a specific sector of the community and solicit input and participation from the people you represent;
  • to manage all 30-day campaign activities within your sector; and
  • to keep an open mind about the opinions of others and strive for win-win solutions in all areas of public debate.
In return for your agreement to the above terms, the Partners for Rural Traffic Safety project pledges the following:

  • not to waste your time—you will be called to serve only when necessary;
  • to begin and end meetings on time and cover only those issues reflected on the meeting agenda;
  • to provide you with the necessary training to help you get the job accomplished;
  • to make available to you expert guidance, assistance and resources as you evaluate alternatives and establish goals; and
  • to ensure a fun and enjoyable experience for you whenever possible.
We agree to the above listed terms and wish to work with each other for the betterment of our community.
