Partners for Rural Traffic Safety Awareness Quiz Answer Key
- In this State, a police officer can stop and ticket a driver simply for not wearing a seat belt.
Obtain a copy of the key provisions of your state’s seat belt and child passenger safety laws before your meeting. You can discuss other provisions of the law as well, like fines, occupants covered, etc.
For the most up-to-date information on the provisions of your state’s Seat Belt, Child Passenger Safety, and other Traffic Safety Laws, contact your Governor’s Highway Safety Office or appropriate NHTSA Regional Office for your area. A listing of contact information is located in Appendix C. You may also contact NHTSA’s Office of Occupant Protection in Washington, DC, at 202-366-2708.
NOTE: In the Slide Presentation following the quiz, primary/standard vs. secondary enforcement issues are discussed in the Speakers Note’s for Slide #9, located in Appendix E, page 208. During the presentation, you can refer back to this quiz question for further discussion. For more information about seat belt legislation and enforcement provision issues, see “Actions that Make A Difference - Legislation that Saves Lives,” in Appendix A.
- Seat Belt and Child Passenger Safety laws are the same in every State.
b., False. Laws, fines, and coverage are different in every State.
- Seat belts are effective in reducing moderate to critical injuries by:
b., one-half. Overall effectiveness of seat belts is 50 - 65 percent.
- Seat belt use is a:
b., Public Concern.
NOTE: This issue is covered in the Slide Presentation following the quiz, Slides Nos. 3 and 4 and Speakers Notes, located in Appendix E.
- In 2000, approximately _________ people died in this country due to motor vehicle related injuries.
c., 40,000. That’s one life every 13 minutes. In comparison, 58,000 American lives lost in the Viet Nam War over a decade. As noted in Viet Nam, Online, “the financial cost to the United States comes to something over $150 billion.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes cost this country $150 billion each year.
- Properly installed child safety seats save lives. Nationally, what percentage of all child seats are not installed correctly?
d. More than 80%. Even though child safety seat use rates are generally high, misuse is a huge problem. Misuse includes the wrong seat for the child’s height and weight, not properly securing the seat into the vehicle, etc.
- Who in the community is responsible for traffic safety?
f., All of the above, and more. Everyone is affected. And everyone is part of the solution.
NOTE: See reference material on Buckle Up America Campaign in Appendix A. This issue also ties into Slide #6 for the presentation following the quiz. Slides and speaker’s notes are located in Appendix E.
- Children should ride appropriately restrained in the back seat of a vehicle until age:
d., 13. Kids 12 and under should ride in the back seat and should never ride in the front seat in a vehicle with a passenger air bag.
| |
- Which of the following are not affected by traffic crashes:
Trick answer - all are affected.
Also covered in Slide #4 of the presentation.
- Vince and Larry© are....
d., The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s crash test dummies.
- If your vehicle has an air bag, you don’t need to wear year seat belt.
b., False. Air bags are “supplemental” safety devices that work in conjunction with the seat belt. Air bags could cause injury to vehicle occupants who are not properly restrained. Always buckle up!
- Is seat belt use in your State higher or lower than the national average?
To answer this question, you will need to find out the current state and national seat belt use rate. Check with the sources identified in Question and Answer No. 1 above.
Option probe/discussion question: Can anyone guess if the local community’s use rate is higher or lower than the State’s? Any reasons why this might be?
- It is safe to ride in the back of a pickup truck.
b., False. No question, it is extremely dangerous. The bed of a pickup truck is designed to haul cargo. There is no protection for passengers.
- The single leading cause of death among Americans ages 1 to 24 is:
b., Traffic crashes.
- More people wear seat belts in pickup trucks than in passenger cars.
b., False. According to NHTSA’s 2000 National Occupant Protection Usage Survey (NOPUS), overall belt use in pick up trucks was 59% compared to 74% in passenger cars. Next time you’re on the road, observe the difference in your area.
- More people buckle up in urban areas than in rural areas.
a., True.
NOTE: See Traffic Safety Facts - Rural Areas, located in Appendix A, for this and other data for rural areas.
- You can personally take action to increase seat belt use in your community.
a., Yes. That’s what we’re all here for, right? We can start by buckling up ourselves and our families, and requiring everyone who rides in our vehicle to always buckle up.
- Have you heard of the Buckle Up America campaign?
Individual response.
Buckle Up America is a national campaign designed to engage the public and private sectors in partnership efforts to increase seat belt use. The goal of the campaign is to increase the national seat belt use rate to 90 percent by the year 2005 and to reduce child occupant fatalities (0-4 years) 25 percent by 2005. The Partners for Rural Traffic Safety Project is a partnership effort supporting the Buckle Up America campaign. We have committed to join in that effort.
