Other Important Information—Kathy will work on getting the Convincer or a Roll-Over machine for the event. We know at this time that Roll-Over is out until Oct. 23 and the Convincer is out until Nov. 12. Liz and Pam will work with Kathy to try and find some other way to get the machines to the event.

Proclamations from Cities and County—In order to have the proclamations declaring occupant safety month during the campaign, the public officials need to be presented with the proclamations at their NEXT meeting in September. The following people have agreed to seek the proclamation from the corresponding places:

Campaign Activities by Community Sector

Community Sector: Health Care
Responsible Party: William, Sandra and Kathy
  • Conduct and advertise ribbon campaign—Secure ribbons and promote the meaning of the green occupant safety ribbon.
  • Create Quick County data fact sheet —Secure county specific data from the state and produce a one- page fact sheet which can be used for talks to community groups and for safety checks conducted by the law enforcement.
  • Flyers and posters in waiting rooms of clinics, home health and public health facilities.
  • Have doctors and primary care providers speak with patients during each visit that month regarding the patients attitude, knowledge and beliefs about occupant safety.
  • Get pre-printed Rx pads for providers to give to patients reminding them to buckle-up.
  • Contact the state and secure local training for proper installation and use of child safety seats. Conduct a check-up event after training.
  • Show videos for OB patients about proper use of seat belts while pregnant and need for infant seat when the baby is born.
  • Get videos to the Health Department and let them inform clients of State Loaner Seat Program.
  • Prepare “Talking Points” sheet and have health care providers available to speak at civic, church and schools.
  • Write an editorial regarding the public costs of health care in connection with seat belts.
  • Do the Honor Roll program for the clinics. Make pledge cards available.
  • Try to get a wrecked car in which the passengers survived for display at the courthouse; have a story board with it.
Community Sector: Faith (Places of Worship)

  • Share tip sheet form ideas list with churches. Allow them to do any that they wish.
  • Suggest they take up a special collection or serve as a drop-off point for recycling child car seats. Remember, all seats more than five- years old and those previously involved in a crash should be destroyed. List of recalled products from Sandra when they get training of proper installation and use.
Community Sector: General Community
Responsible Party: Troy
  • Get banners that can hang over main streets for campaign.
  • Conduct a poster contest for upper grades and a coloring contest for lower grades (with Jerry). Seek sponsor for prizes.
  • Work with Scouts to distribute flyers and literature during Quick Days Festival and other activities.
  • Write letter to editor.
  • Check on creation and printing of Cool Covers for seat belts for little kids (Batman, etc ... ).
  • Speak to Farm Bureau encouraging pursuit of primary seat belt law for next session.
  • Place posters and flyers in public spaces—library, post office, court house, etc ... .
  • Conduct a “Porch Light On” night to promote buckling up.
  • Give car seat to first baby born during the campaign.
  • Contact insurance agents regarding give-aways and sponsorship of events.
  • Get a public service announcement on cable channels.
  • Order stuffers (message printed on 3 1/2 inches by 9 inches—see catalog) for water bills.

  • Try to get businesses to put Buckle Up clip art in display ads during the campaign.
  • Posters in storefronts.
  • Order stuffers (message printed on 3 1/2 inches by 9 inches—see catalog) for bank statements.
  • Have a display in a bank lobby.
  • Provide stuffers to grocery stores for plastic bags.
  • See if grocery stores can provide blank brown bags; give to schools for them to draw “buckle up” message on them; then use.
  • Check with garages about replacing broken seat belts at a discount.
  • Distribute “Kids Aren’t Cargo” hang tags at the feed store.
  • Have give-away (trinkets and stickers or insurance candy) at any drive-up service: telephone company and bank.
  • Get Sonic and Jimmy’s to give fries or drink coupon that law enforcement can give during safety checks for those wearing a seat belt.
  • Get Chamber of Commerce to watch the eight-minute film about economic cost to the community.
  • Inform businesses about the Honor Roll program and try to get them to compete with each other during the month.
  • Hang tags in lot cars at auto sales businesses.
  • Hang tags at filling stations.
Community Sector: Law Enforcement

  • Conduct safety checks around the county. Give away community fact sheet (get from health care), hang tags, food coupons, and key rings, etc ... as positive reinforcement.
  • Create “Talking Points” tip sheet and have law enforcement person- nel available to speak to schools, churches and civic groups.
  • Add a seat belt component to the already existing Crime Prevention Kit.
  • Talk to judges and see if they will dismiss charges (less court cost) if offenders <21 years of age take a three-hour course.
  • At fourth week of campaign, announce increased enforcement of law.
  • Check with Radio Shack regarding any campaigns they may be offering.
Community Sector: Education

  • Conduct poster and coloring contest (with Troy)—art teacher will be judge. Display at bank; seek prizes from insurance agents
  • Announcements at the end of ball games, “Drive safely and buckle up.”
  • Let schools know that law enforce- ment and health care providers are available to speak to classes.
  • Schedule Vince and Larry© to greet parents dropping off kids at the grade schools.
  • Make video and curriculum avail- able for classrooms.
  • Distribute age-appropriate posters for school hallways.
  • Have first and second grade teachers get their kids to pretend to “Buckle Up” for the day in their desks.
  • Call Principals and discuss opportunities for instruction in health classes.
  • Have “Buckle Up” message on school’s lighted signs.
  • Try to schedule Roll-Over machine at high school.
  • Have announcement and clip art in the morning calendars—use ribbons in schools.
