Safety Countermeasures is a periodic update of the program activities of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Safety Countermeasures Division |
Staff Changes In June, Sarah Hunt, a graduate student from West Virginia University's Community Health Promotion Program, joined the Division under a cooperative agreement. Sarah has been working in all the countermeasure areas. She worked on the Bicycle Safety 2000 Conference and will work on follow-up activities, and represents the Division on the Older Road Users Team. Sarah also designed the Fall 2000 Safety Countermeasures. In July, after the Bicycle Safety 2000 Conference, the Safety Countermeasures Division said good-bye to Amy Matush, who was the Division's graduate student intern for 1999-2000. Amy worked on several critical projects during her year with NHTSA, including the Bicycle Safety 2000 Conference, the Getting to School Safely Community Action Kit, and redesign of the NTS-15 web site. Amy has not gone far, however. She was accepted to the Presidential Management Intern program and began working at the National Institutes of Health in August. We wish Amy the best in her new position. Lori Millen, who has been responsible for pedestrian safety programs is on a special assignment with the Media and Marketing Division of the Office of Communications and Outreach. In September, Carra Shoene from the Media and Marketing Division joined the Safety Countermeasures Division to work on pedestrian safety programs. Lori and Carra will be on these special assignments through December 2000. Finally, Joyce Jones, who worked with the National Driver Register, is dividing her time for the next four months between the Safety Countermeasures Division and the Impaired Driving Division. Among other tasks, Joyce will be interpreting feedback from users of the Bicycle CD-Rom distributed several years ago, in preparation for development of a similar pedestrian program CD-Rom. America Walks Recognizes the Partnership for a Walkable America During the Pro Bike-Pro Walk Conference in September 2000 in Philadelphia, PA, America Walks recognized the Partnership for a Walkable America for "outstanding pedestrian advocacy as demonstrated by establishing the National Walk Our Children to School Day." NHTSA was cited as one of the partners instrumental in establishing and promoting Walk Our Children to School Day. America Walks was established in 1996 as a coalition of local pedestrian advocacy groups from across the United States, each working in its own community to improve conditions for walking. |
