PATTERNS FOR LIFE - Child Passenger Safety

Patterns for Life is dedicated to reducing the number of children killed and seriously injured each year in traffic crashes by helping agencies and organizations within local communities form lasting partnerships, and sharing resources. Many NHTSA child passenger safety materials are available through this and related efforts. See the 1998 NHTSA Traffic Safety Materials Catalog for a listing of a wide range of materials and planning information. Here's what's new:

Program Materials

Child Passenger Safety Training Programs (1) is a brochure that explains the importance of professional training and how to enroll in a NHTSA certification course or other professional program. This brochure was included in Campaign Safe & Sober Program Planner 18. (December 1998, DOT HS 808 813, Item #1P1050)

Zero Tolerance for Unbuckled Children (2) is one of the latest in the Buckle Up, America! series of Program Planners. It was designed to promote the Memorial Day 1999 "Operation ABC Mobilization," but the information and ideas are useful for planning any child passenger safety effort, including the Thanksgiving mobilization. (March 1999, DOT HS 808 864, Item #1P1128)

Consumer Materials

A Parent's Guide to Booster Seats (3) is a brochure designed to encourage parents to use a booster seat once a child has outgrown a child safety seat. It highlights the different kinds of booster seats, which children should use one and why, and how to buy one. (July 1998, DOT HS 808 671, Item #1P1062)

Child Safety Seat Product Information (4) is a comprehensive list prepared in conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatrics. It includes product information on infant, convertible and booster seats on the market as of summer 1998. This booklet was included in Campaign Safe & Sober Program Planner 18 (December 1998, DOT HS 808 815, Item #1P1129)"

Uniform Child Safety Seat System (5) is a flyer explaining the new system and how it will make child safety seat installation easier. A camera-ready copy is included in this planner, and it is also available for ordering in quantity. (March 1999, Item #1P1134)

Child Transportation Safety Tips (5) is a folio of reproducible black-and-white sheets on a variety of child transportation safety topics, including child safety seats, booster seats, pedestrian issues, bicycle safety, school bus safety, safety seat recalls, and the "Quick Safety Seat Checkup." NOTE: Half of the Tips are reproduced in this Program Planner (see the Camera-Ready Art Catalog), including five new Tips. (Revised December 1998, DOT HS 808 301, Item #1P1045)

Protecting Your Children: Used Child Safety Seat Checklist (7) is a reproducible ten-step checklist for parents and caregivers to determine whether or not a used child safety seat is safe. Also useful for thrift and consignment stores to decide whether or not to accept a seat and for community groups who conduct "bounty" programs to collect and destroy old, unsafe seats. Printed in English on one side and Spanish on the other. The flyer was included in Campaign Safe & Sober Program Planner 18. (September 1998)

What Every Childcare Provider Needs to Know (6) is a booklet to educate operators of center-based and home-based daycare about important considerations in child passenger safety, including correct installation of child safety seats. It also includes ideas for incorporating traffic safety messages into "circle time" and other children's activities. This booklet was included in Campaign Safe & Sober Program Planner 18. (December 1998, DOT HS 808 814, Item #1P1068)
