RESEARCH AND EVALUATION
NHTSA’s Research and Evaluation Division currently has approximately 70 studies underway in the alcohol- and drug-impaired driving area, only a few of which have been noted here. Information on previous research can be found in the "Compendium of Traffic Safety Research Projects 1987-1997" (1997; DOT HS 808 599; Order #1P0536). Specific topics in both past and current studies include determining the extent and nature of impairment; legislation; detection, investigation, and enforcement; prosecution and adjudication; countermeasures and sanctions; determining the public’s attitudes and current behavior, and the effectiveness of prevention programs. A few of the most recent studies include:

  • Problems and Solutions in DWI Enforcement Systems; 1998; DOT HS 808 666; Order #7P0098
  • Alcohol Highway Safety: Problem Update; 1998; DOT HS 808 743; Order #1P0871
  • National Survey of Drinking and Driving Attitudes and Behavior: 1997; 1999; DOT HS 808 844; Order #1P0536
  • Driving After Drug or Alcohol Use: Findings from the 1996 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse; 1999; DOT HS 808 838; Order #4P0010
  • A just-released handbook entitled "The Art of Appropriate Evaluation: A Guide for Highway Safety Program Managers" (1999 ), is an easy-to-read booklet developed for non-researchers. The hand-book explains why evaluation is important, the steps involved in conducting an evaluation; and how to find, and work with, an evaluation specialist. DOT HS 808 894; Order #5P0233
