As host of a party, you are responsible for your guests. Here are a few simple things you can do when hosting a party to help your guests have a good time and stay safe:
1. Keep foremost in your mind the comfort and safety of your guests. As guests arrive, suggest that they select one person in their group to remain alcohol-free and serve as the designated driver.
2. Avoid making alcohol the focus of your party. Plan group activities such as party games so that nobody feels left out. Provide other entertainment such as music, dancing and interesting conversation.
3. Designate a person who knows not to over-serve guests as your bartender.
4. Provide guests who have been drinking with alternate transportation. Allow intoxicated guests to spend the night in your home, arrange for a sober guest to give them a ride, or call a taxi.
5. Serve food such as meatballs, finger sandwiches and cheeses. Foods high in protein are effective in slowing the absorption of alcohol. Avoid offering salty foods which make people thirsty.
6. Never serve alcohol to anyone who is under 21.
7. Remember that only time can sober up an intoxicated person
8. Stop serving alcohol at least one hour before your party ends.
9. Provide tasty non-alcoholic "mocktails" for your guests. Keep in mind that about one-third of the population prefers non-alcoholic drinks.
