Since the first commercial radio station went on the air earlier this century, America’s broadcasters have been committed to serving the communities in which they operate. It is a promise that predates passage of the Radio Act of 1927, with its charge to broadcasters to “serve the public interest, convenience, and necessity.”

This year, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) celebrates its 75th anniversary. NAB marks this year with the release of a national report on the broadcast industry’s community service accomplishments. The report’s conclusion is that community service – at least the fraction that can be quantified – amounted to $6.85 billion over 12 months. Broadcasters’ community service is diverse, enormously valuable, and has a major impact on communities all across America.

NAB’s Office of National Campaigns assists radio and television stations in developing local community service initiatives that address national social concerns. One such initiative is the Stations Target Alcohol Abuse Reduction (STAR) Campaign. It is the single largest public awareness project ever undertaken by the broadcast industry. This comprehensive, bilingual initiative addresses many aspects of alcohol abuse including impaired driving and responsible hosting. The STAR Campaign extends beyond public service announcements (PSA) to include newscasts, editorials, public affairs and entertainment programming, talk shows, sportscasts, and off-air partnerships at the national, state and local levels.

The STAR Campaign is carefully designed and grounded in the latest scientific research. An advisory board of nationally recognized experts in social marketing, communications, research, and medicine reviews STAR Campaign materials for accuracy and appropriateness of message and advises NAB about effective strategies for reaching a variety of audiences with anti-alcohol abuse messages.

The STAR Campaign includes audio and video broadcast materials, printed guides and staff support to help broadcasters combat alcohol abuse. These and new 3D Prevention Month materials are available for broadcast stations or organizations who would like to utilize the materials in approaching a station to partner on 3D Prevention Month activities. For information on these free materials, contact NAB at (202) 429-5447, fax (202) 429-5410, or e-mail (jlivengood@nab.org).
