Program Materials

10 Safety Steps to School (4) is a kit designed for use by elementary educators. It includes a variety of reproducible materials that can be used to create lessons to motivate students, friends, and relatives to practice safe transportation when traveling to and from school. There are no quantity limits on these pieces. They include:

  • Dear Educator letter (b) to teachers and school administrators concerning the safety of their students when traveling to and from school. It includes ideas on how to incorporate the 10 Safety Steps to School materials into classroom activities and lessons. (1995, included in kit)
  • 10 Safety Steps To School fact sheet is a one page list of the 10 safety rules students should follow when traveling to school. (1995, DOT HS OST-X0129D, Item #5P0183)
  • Student/Parent Pledge Sheet (c) contains safety pledges to be signed by students and their parents. Each sheet has 10 safety related promises both the students and their parents pledge to following when traveling. (1995, DOT HS OST-X0129A, Item #5P0177)
  • "I Travel Safely To School" sticker (3" round) is designed to be placed on each pledge sheet signed by students and their parents. (1995, DOT HS OST-X0129B, Item #5Z0001)
  • 10 Safety Steps To School poster (8 x 44) (a) depicts 10 ways that students can remain safe whenever they are traveling. It is black and white, ready to be colored. (1995, DOT HS OST-X0129C, Item #5P0179)

    Guidelines for the Safe Transportation of School Age Children in School Buses is for school and other transportation managers to assist in the development and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures. It covers child safety seats, school bus seat spacing, restraint anchorages, emergency evacuation procedures, and driver and monitor training.     National Walk Our Children to School Day (2) is a report on the 1998 event with photos and success stories from across the country, and suggestions on how to plan an event for 1999. See the "Pedestrian Safety" section on page 10.

    Operation TEACH (3) is an organizing guide for educators to incorporate buckle up messages into science, math and civics lessons. It recommends age-appropriate activities to get children involved in key traffic safety messages and to reinforce good buckle-up habits for the entire family. A copy of Operation TEACH is included in this Program Planner (September 1998, DOT HS 808 783, Item #5P0231)

    Consumer Materials

    Back to School Safely (1) is a colorful game and activities booklet for elementary school children covering bicycle, pedestrian, school bus and passenger safety issues. "Gus the Bus" introduces songs and poems to help children remember basic safety rules. A coloring page and crossword puzzle (a) reinforce the messages. The center section is designed to be removed and photocopied for take-home, while the outside game board (b) and game pieces (c) can be used as a classroom teaching tool.
