| Safe VacationsOccupant Protection for the Whole FamilySummer Travel is Intermodal |
August is vacation month, one of the heaviest travel times of the year for American families. Whether it’s a weekend at the beach, a cross-country flight to visit relatives, a camping trip in the mountains or a drive across the state to take a college student to school, we’re out and about. August is a great time for traffic safety programs that focus on occupant protection for the entire family, "intermodal" issues that emphasize more than one mode of transportation, and travel issues such as fatigue and heat. This activities guide gives you some ideas for creating new programs or enhancing existing campaigns by focusing on the topics that are – pardon the pun – hot at this time of the year.
Hot, Hot, Hot!
- A locked car sitting in the summer sun quickly turns into an oven. Temperatures can climb from 78˝ to 100˝ in just three minutes, to 125˝ in 6-8 minutes. NEVER leave children or pets in an unattended car, even for a minute.
- On the road, keep the entire family hydrated with water and fruit juice on a regular basis. Dress lightly in the car, especially the kids. Child safety seats can be hotter than a vehicle seat and children’s bodies absorb more heat from the environment.
- Drivers should wear sunglasses. When driving into a glare, look at the road and not at the source of light. Decrease your speed to make up for the lack of clear vision.
