COMING IN FEBRUARY 2000: STOP AGGRESSIVE DRIVING What do we know about aggressive drivers? They're high risk. Their frustration level is high and their concern for other motorists is low. They cut across age groups, gender, income levels and ethnicity. They tailgate, weave in and out, pass on the right, speed, run stop signs and red lights, make hand gestures, scream, honk, flash their lights, and more. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has completed the first wave of materials under the new "Stop Aggressive Driving" campaign, including radio public service announcements in English and Spanish and a presentation folder with other helpful materials (a sample article, op ed piece, fact sheet, talking points and tip sheet). These will be ready for distribution in late February 2000. New materials will be posted on NHTSA's Web site at www.nhtsa.dot.gov and can also be obtained by faxing a request to 202-493-2062. With the support of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, Inc. (OAAA), a national public service billboard campaign to fight aggressive driving "Drive Nice" will help bring the message to the motoring public. Each year OAAA sponsors a national public service campaign, with member companies donating space and production. For 2000, OAAA selected aggressive driving. The clever campaign, featuring fish-eye photos of aggressive drivers, will remind drivers about driving behaviors while they are behind the wheel. |
