You Drink & Drive. You Lose. – America’s Impaired Driving Prevention Campaign

Working closely with partners like the National Association of Governors’ Highway Safety Repre-sentatives and various law enforcement and traffic safety organizations, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) unveiled the You Drink & Drive. You Lose. impaired driving prevention campaign in December 1999.

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of thousands of devoted public and private partners, the campaign launch was an overwhelming success. More than 50 million Americans were exposed to our lifesaving message in their newspapers, on the internet, radio and television. Our goal is to build on this incredible momentum and all the hard work that is taking place in communities throughout America aimed at stopping impaired driving and saving lives.

Join the Next Mobilization - July 4th Holiday

This summer, NHTSA will partner with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Nationwide Insurance, law enforcement and hundreds of public safety advocates to conduct sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols as part of the Fourth of July National Mobilization effort and National Sobriety Checkpoint Week.

You Can Stop Impaired Driving. Here’s How...

Your pledge to participate is crucial to the success of the You Drink & Drive. You Lose./National Sobriety Checkpoint Week Fourth of July Mobilization

Your participation will help make the streets safer. You can educate the public and encourage responsible decision-making. By joining the Mobilization, you will have an opportunity to make a difference in your community by:

  • Partnering with the media to raise awareness of the deadly consequences of impaired driving
  • Building and expanding partnerships among local and state organizations
  • Creating community support for law enforcement’s efforts and
  • Enforcing existing laws through active enforcement programs.

Reducing the death toll to 11,000 represents a national commitment. But to reach our goal we must begin at the community level. You hold the keys to America’s success. And your commitment to participate in You Drink & Drive. You Lose. is a pledge to make America’s roadways and communities safer by intensifying efforts to fight impaired driving.

New Materials Are Available to Help...

The second installment in the You Drink & Drive. You Lose. Law Enforcement Action Kit will be available this Spring. See What’s New & What’s Hot at NHTSA’s web site: www.nhtsa.dot.gov. It will assist you in planning and publicizing sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. It will also provide helpful tips for building partnerships and working with local media to promote your efforts and lifesaving message.

By providing these tools, NHTSA and the You Drink & Drive. You Lose. partners hope to make each community program a success and prove the “11,000 by 2005” goal achievable.

By working together we can save lives...because when

You Drink & Drive. You Lose.
