PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

  • Impaired Driving Assessments
NHTSA currently offers states an opportunity for outside review of a state’s impaired driving program by a nationally recognized team of experts. NHTSA has completed 22 statewide impaired driving assessments. The team, through interviews, assesses the current status and provides recommendations for improvements/enhancements on programs related to impaired driving. The team assesses activities in program management; prevention; deterrence; driver licensing; and treatment and rehabilitation. The states completed to date include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. If states are interested in requesting an assessment, they should contact their NHTSA Regional Office or the Impaired Driving Division.

  • Rapid Response Teams
Through a NHTSA grant, the National Association of Governors’ Highway Safety Representatives (NAGHSR) has developed a model for states to use in responding to the needs of communities in dealing with underage drinking. The model was tested and refined in six demonstration sites throughout the country. It involves the use of a cadre of experts to assess the community’s needs and assist in developing a strategic plan. Seven "how-to" booklets are being prepared to address the areas of coalition building, needs assessment / strategic planning, enforcement, media relations, legislative advocacy, self sufficiency, evaluation and prevention, and will be available in 2000.
