Vision:
To provide national leadership in the design, development, and implementation of integrated highway and traffic safety records information systems.

Mission:
Support NHTSA's goal of reducing the incidence of traffic fatalities, injuries, and crashes.

Purpose:
To improve the timeliness, accuracy, completeness, uniformity, integration, and accessibility of the safety data for highway safety purposes at the local, state, and national levels.  Traffic records data are the basis for defining, managing, and evaluating traffic safety activities and performance.

Goals:

  • NATIONAL LEADERSHIP

To develop and direct a national program effort for establishing integrated highway and traffic safety records systems in states to be characterized by high standards of data collection and an expanded role for traffic records data as a management tool for highway safety program decision making, research, and evaluation activities.

  • TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

To assist our customers in assessing the quality, needs, and uses of their current traffic records data systems and components; to provide appropriate tools and resources to enable them to carry out planning, development, and evaluative activities.  Methods and procedures include technologies, best practices, system organization, and communications protocols.

  • TECHNICAL STANDARDS FOR HIGHWAY AND TRAFFIC SAFETY   INFORMATION SYSTEMS

To develop and promote, in concert with our partners, technical standards for data collection, analytic methods, and highway safety program applications.

  • COLLABORATION & COOPERATION

To expand our participation in collaborative and cooperative efforts with other DOT Offices, the states, and with public and private organizations to ensure that the traffic records and highway safety communities stay informed of technology advances and involved in the development and application of model traffic records data systems.
